Cascade Pygmy Goat Association

Established in 1983 as Western Washington's first pygmy goat club, the Cascade Pygmy Goat Association (CPGA) is an affiliated club of the National Pygmy Goat Association (NPGA), the official breed association of the Pygmy Goat. NPGA promotes pygmy goats by setting official breed standards, provides animal registration, maintains a database of pedigrees, certifies judges, and sanctions pygmy goat shows around the United States.

History of the Pygmy Goat.

Not all little goats are Pygmy Goats!

Derived from the Cameroon or West African Dwarf Goat, the Pygmy Goat first arrived in the United States in 1959, when Heinz Ruhe, animal importer and zoo builder, received his first shipment of Pygmy Goats to California from Sweden. For many years, the Pygmy Goat was only be seen in zoos and research facilities.

Then in the early 1970s, interest in the Pygmy Goat began to grow in the private sector when several articles were published about the animal. Letters poured in from all over to see if their beloved animals were truly Pygmy Goats and request a national registry be created. In 1974, a small group of people with diverse backgrounds in biology, zoology, physiology, medicine and genetics came together for the purpose of drafting the Pygmy Goat Breed Standard and the National Pygmy Goat Association was born.

The Cascade Pygmy Goat Association has the ultimate authority to use contributions made at our discretion that is consistent with the purpose of the association as outlined in our Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws.
